Q&A
Is there any age restriction?
Most suitable donors are of 18-75 years of age. For those under 18 years of age, consent from a parent or guardian is necessary.
Is there any religious objection to being an organ donor?
Islam, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism, as well as other religions support the concept and practice of organ transplantation. The principle which is embodied in all these religions is that organ donation which is done voluntarily, is a "good deed" which benefits mankind. Islamic authorities in Malaysia and other muslim countries have issued "Fatwa" (religious rulings) which support organ donation.
Whom should I notify of my intention to become an organ donor?
You should inform your family and your doctor of your wish to be an organ donor to ensure their co-operation.
How can I become a donor?
Simply complete an Organ Donor Form in the presence of a witness. This will serve as a notice of intention to donate any or all of the body's usable organs as specified. You will be sent an Organ Donor Card. You should inform your relatives of your wishes and carry your Donor Card with you at all times.
How is death determined?
Organ donation is not considered until death has occurred. Death is determined by a series of clinical tests which confirm brain death. These tests are performed independently by experienced doctors who have no connection with transplantation procedures and they establish that the patient is dead.
What happens to the donor after organs have been removed?
Organs retrieval is a careful procedure that leaves no visible disfigurement. It is performed like any other surgical procedure. After the organs have been removed, the body is returned to the family for funeral arrangements.
Can I change my mind later?
Yes. Simply destroy the Organ Donor Card you have signed and inform your relatives of your change of decision.
